Laika

Title: Laika

Author: Nick Abadzis

Publisher: First Second Books, 2007

Laika, a Russian dog who was launched into space upon the Soviet satellite Sputnik ll, in 1957.

This graphic novel is based on a true account of how a dog from the streets of Moscow became the first living creature to be used as a test subject and ultimately didn't return from the mission.

Laika has a need for human affection and has no idea what is about to happen to her after being captured and trained for space travel.

The author's storytelling is told through the many character's and events on different points of view. It is seen through the dog handler's eyes who has a passion for all animals especially Laika, but ultimately, she is fearful of Laika's space travel.

However, the most impressive and outstanding storytelling through the book is when the reader sees the world through Laika's eyes and inside of her head.

Earthy tones are used throughout the book with cartoon style while at times panels are black and white stills like in a movie.

An outstanding special story with lots of suspenseful cliff hangers that would interest dog loving space travellers.
